While talking about Rukhin, we first mention his taking aim in the current moment, in the present. He followed the sinuosities of political life and did play his part in it. He wanted to overcome the retrospective character of Leningrad art and its isolationism, he was driven to Moscow and did succeed in coping with that city: he befriended the most advanced Moscow avantgarde artists and, in a sense, became their leader. He found his general topic to match his political temperament: he expressed his critical position in nonnarrative and nonpainterly form by utilizing the newest expressive means he verified through the experience of international popart. His newest methods were extramimetic or, rather, quasimimetic.
