Ustyugov's painting is indeed full of an emotional intensity which comes from its extreme openness, sincerity, and organic integrity. The distance Ustyugov keeps from the practical approach to things, from reality in the everyday sense, from reality of relations and complex causes and consequences is not something that has been developed specially for art - is not a pose, but merely a touch fact of life. Ustyugov is indeed removed from reality; reality is something for which he is badly prepared, which he does not understand, and which he takes no interest.
